Food Systems at UW

The University of Washington is tackling the main challenges to local and global food systems today. It is more important than ever to engage education and research in growing sustainable, resilient, and equitable food systems. This requires a campus-wide food systems network. This network explores how food systems interact with public health, economics, society, and the environment.

In the fall 2020, faculty who specialize in food systems within the UW School of Public Health in the Nutritional Sciences Program, together with the Population Health Initiative, convened a UW Food Systems Education and Research Network to coalesce the food systems expertise of the University of Washington’s faculty and staff. Our initial and continuing goals are to:

  • Bring together UW experts from multiple disciplines to address food systems challenges.
  • Develop new food systems research and education initiatives at local and global levels.

Education

The study of food systems is growing at the University of Washington!

Programs

Food Systems, Nutrition, and Health Major

UW’s Bachelor of Arts in Food Systems, Nutrition, and Health explores the complex intersections and relationships among food, culture, economics, the environment, justice, labor, policy, and population health. Many of the world’s widespread health challenges are consequences of our food systems. Students in the food systems major study these systems and their impacts on nutrition and health outcomes.

Explore program capstone projects in this major which serve regional organizations, view major requirements and course electives available to students in this major, and how students get involved as leaders in the UW Food Systems Student Advisory Council (U-SAC)

Nutrition Minor

The Nutrition minor is offered to UW undergraduate students from all majors and provides students with a foundation of knowledge in nutritional sciences, food studies, food systems, and population health. Students examine food and nutrition practices and policies that affect sustainable diets and long-term health.

Courses

If you’re considering your options before choosing a major or minor, explore food classes at UW, or check out these featured food systems courses available to any UW student.

In 2022, UW Study Abroad will also offer ANTH 411 A: The Culture and Politics of Food: Study Abroad in Italy, and La Dolce Vita: Comparative Food Systems in Italy.
