Meet two of our 2023-24 food systems scholars

Valerie Lam

Valerie Lam

Valerie’s passion for food has remained unchanged since she was young. She chose to major in Food Systems, Nutrition, and Health to delve deeper into the study of nutrition and health, and to strive to adopt a healthier eating lifestyle. In the program, she’s learned ways we could improve the current food system using a multi-faceted approach to making food fair to people around the world. She hopes to use her skills in a professional career path by contributing to ensuring public access to food and nutrition benefits, providing food benefits to low-income households, ultimately reduce health disparity in our community.

Carlos Morales

Carlos Morales

Carlos serves as a cooking facilitator for Solid Ground in Seattle, an organization working to end poverty and undo racism and other oppressions that are root causes of poverty. Carlos says in a Q&A published last year with the School of Public Health, “The Food Systems, Nutrition, and Health major offers a focus and attention to food systems and it aligns with my interest in becoming an agent of change within food policy. I plan to apply and attend the Evans School at the UW starting in the 2024-2025 academic school year to pursue my master’s in public administration.”
