2017-2018 Health Sciences Common Book: Changing Planet, Changing Health

The Health Sciences Service Learning and Advocacy Group has selected this  year’s Health Sciences Common Book: Changing Planet, Changing Health by Paul R. Epstein and Dan Ferber

Students, staff, and faculty in the Schools of Public Health, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Social Work are asked to read this book over the summer and come prepared to participate in the 2017–2018 Health Sciences Common Book Series. The Common Book Series provides a shared framework for inter-professional dialogue with the goal of creating collaborative health professionals. It’s anticipated that the series will include a series of lectures and seminars that will challenge UW health sciences students to see climate change as an issue that will affect not only their families and communities, but also their future patients.

This year’s topic is especially timely and relevant to public health professionals. Changing Planet, Changing Health, a well-known book first published in 2011 by the late Dr. Paul R. Epstein and journalist Dan Ferber, explores the links between global climate change and altering patterns of cholera, malaria, asthma, and other diseases, while delving into the role of free markets and cap-and-trade proposals. The authors take the reader from the US to Mozambique and Honduras while presenting innovative solutions to one of the 21st century’s greatest challenges.

Copies of the book are available on reserve through the Health Sciences Library and the main UW Library or can be purchased online from the UW Bookstore or another bookseller.
