Graduate students receive 2025 leadership and service awards

Congratulations to Hannah Sanders and Kate Shuhart, graduate students in the University of Washington School of Public Health Food Systems, Nutrition, and Health (FSNH) program who have been recognized by their peers with 2025 leadership and service awards.  Each year, faculty and students in the FSNH graduate program nominate and select two exceptional senior student recipients for these honors.

Hannah Sanders

Hannah Sanders

Recipient of the 2025 Carrie Cheney Student Leadership Award

Hannah Sanders is the recipient of the 2025 Carrie Cheney Student Leadership Award.  This award was established in memory of Carrie Cheney, a longtime FSNH faculty member who served as a respected leader and mentor for students.

Sanders is a Master of Public Health in Public Health Nutrition (MPH-Nutrition) student who is also completing registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) training through the Graduate Coordinated Program in Dietetics (GCPD).

Sanders was selected for the award by her peers because of her “passion and leadership and respect” for the hard work she has put into the program over the past two years.

Nominating peers celebrate Sanders as an approachable and natural leader.

“In group projects, she is amazing at making sure all voices are heard, keeping the group on task and delegating tasks without being overbearing. Hannah is also a fantastic presenter and effortlessly captures the attention of and engages with the audience.”

Sanders also received a 2025 School of Public Health Excellence Award for Outstanding Master’s Student in the FSNH program.

Kate Shuhart

2025 Recipient of the Beverly Winter-Eben Student Service Award

Kate Shuhart is the 2025 recipient of the Beverly Winter-Eben Student Service Award which recognizes students who contribute to the program through meaningful service done in a spirit of caring, concern, and generosity. The award was established in 2014 in memory of Beverly Winter-Eben who served the program as the program manager for 20 years.

Shuhart is an MPH-Nutrition student who is also completing RDN training through the GCPD.

Those who nominated Shuhart remark on her commitment to promoting community within her cohort, being present for her peers, and a strong commitment to her work and community.

“Kate is so wonderfully positive. Super supportive in class, creates a very welcoming space for people to collaborate and engage in discussion. Her physical presence is always so positive and supportive. She clearly has a great coach mentor mentality and brings that with her in all she does.”

Others highlight how welcoming Shuhart is with fellow students and instructors.

“She’s often the first one to break the silence after the group is left pondering a question longer than is comfortable. Her comments are insightful and often bring other students into the conversation.”

Congratulations again to both students for their excellence and contributions.
