Expanding the Registered Dietitian’s Role in Eating Disorder Relapse Prevention
A quality improvement project was conducted to supplement eating disorder relapse prevention efforts by Registered Dietitians (RDs) at Seattle Children’s Adolescent Medicine Clinic. As part of a broader effort to standardize the nutrition workflow, a standard process document was updated to ensure inclusion of relapse prevention elements for the final nutrition appointment of the eating disorder treatment program. An educational handout and worksheet with nutrition recommendations for relapse prevention was also created to be provided to patients and used to guide the RD’s intervention. Feedback on both documents was gathered from the Adolescent Medicine RDs and the handout was trialed during a patient appointment to identify opportunities for improvement. The documents were updated accordingly and are now used on a regular basis at the clinic.
