Promoting Equity Within WA SNAP-Ed Curricula

Washington State Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (WA SNAP-Ed) aims to improve nutrition-related health outcomes, including through direct education. While SNAP-Ed focuses on income for identifying its participants, efforts to promote equity and create inclusive environments are vital to delivering just and fair programming. Annually, WA SNAP-Ed approves various curricula used by local educators. This project focused on examining these curricula through an equity lens to enhance the relevance and effectiveness of education delivery.

A review of completed curriculum review rubrics illuminated assets and gaps in twenty-two curricula. These gaps informed recommendations to enhance equity in the delivery of SNAP-Ed materials. A literature review of best practices for delivering equitable nutrition education supported this work. Findings also informed the modification of the rubric used to evaluate curriculum options to better incorporate health and racial equity considerations in a way that aligns with WA SNAP-Ed goals.

This process led to the development of a supplemental Curriculum Resource Guide for educators to use in their communities. The guide contains recommendations to address the cultural and linguistic needs of WA SNAP-Ed participants. Accompanying the recommendations are informative materials and resources to foster implementation in classroom settings.

The guide is a living document and will be adapted and expanded over time with new resources and information. This project underscores the need for ongoing and continuous assessment of, and subsequent adjustments to, WA SNAP-Ed educational materials to maintain relevance for various communities throughout the state.
