WA State’s Health and Physical Education K-12 Learning Standards in Seattle Public High Schools
Seattle Children’s Hospital providers are unfamiliar with the Nutrition Education Standards (“NES”) that inform classroom instruction in Seattle Public High Schools. However, information shared by patients during clinic visits has indicated that students are receiving information on nutrition that may differ from evidence based guidelines. This project examined the strategies for revising, implementing and overseeing the 2016 Washington State Health and Physical Education K-12 Learning Standards (“Standards”). The project also assessed School-Based Health Clinic (“SBHC”) provider knowledge of NES and current collaborations with high school health teachers.
A literature review was conducted on the Health Education Standards at the national, state and district level. Publicly available state and national data was reviewed regarding Standards development and revision. State and district stakeholders were identified and interviews conducted to understand the revision, implementation and oversight. SBHC providers from three Seattle Public High Schools were also identified, and stakeholder interviews conducted to understand provider knowledge of the Standards and current collaborations with health teachers. This project culminated in a poster presentation given to Seattle Children’s Adolescent providers.
