Dr. Marian Neuhouser takes office as President of the American Society for Nutrition

ASN Press Release: ASN PRESIDENT SEEKS TO UPHOLD THE IMPORTANCE OF EVIDENCE-BASED NUTRITION SCIENCE

June 1, 2016—Marian L. Neuhouser takes office as President of the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) on June 1. Dr. Neuhouser is a Full Member in the Cancer Prevention Program, Division of Public Health Sciences at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington as well as Core Faculty in Nutritional Sciences and Affiliate Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Washington. ­

“Our diverse membership engages in rigorous nutrition research across the scientific spectrum from cells to population sciences. This scientific diversity is our strength as we seek to address critical questions about nutrition and human health. ASN provides an important platform for networking, training and building scientific capacity within our broad membership. In addition, we need to educate funders and key leaders on the importance of evidence-based nutrition science as a key mediator of health promotion and disease prevention across the lifespan,” said Neuhouser.

Dr. Neuhouser received her PhD in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Washington in 1996. Dr. Neuhouser’s research focus for the past 20 years has been the role of nutrition and energy balance in the prevention and survivorship of breast and prostate cancers and other diet-related chronic diseases. She is Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator of multiple NIH-funded grants and contracts ranging from controlled feeding trials to large population-based cohorts, including some based on special populations such minorities, the elderly and those experiencing health disparities. She is also engaged in methods research to improve dietary assessment.  Dr. Neuhouser has authored over 275 peer-reviewed publications and a dozen book chapters related to dietary assessment methods, energy balance, diet and health and cancer prevention. Dr. Neuhouser has a passion for mentoring graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and early career investigators. In addition to being a member of the American Society for Nutrition, Dr. Neuhouser is also a member of the American Association for Cancer Research, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and the American Society for Preventive Oncology.
