Students recognized for 2024 leadership and service awards

Congratulations to University of Washington Food Systems, Nutrition, and Health students Aimee Allen and Lauren Perkins who have received 2024 program awards for their excellence in leadership and service.

Aimee Allen

Aimee Allen

Recipient of the 2024 Carrie Cheney Student Leadership Award

Aimee Allen, a student in the MS and RDN training program, is the 2024 recipient of the Carrie Cheney Student Leadership Award. This award was established in memory of Carrie Cheney, a former faculty member who was a leader and mentor for students in the graduate program for many years. One student each year is selected for the award based on the nominations from their peers in recognition of demonstrated leadership.

Allen’s peers remarked on how dedicated she has been to program work over the past few years, and the passion she gives to her work.  This level of engagement has been inspirational to other students and has earned great admiration from peers, faculty, and fellow students.

Allen’s master’s thesis investigated the association between the daily hassles and uplifts related to eating location and eating competence (EC), and whether socio-demographics impact this association.

Lauren Perkins

Lauren Perkins

2024 Recipient of the Beverly Winter-Eben Student Service Award

Lauren Perkins, an MPH-Nutrition student is the 2024 recipient of the Beverly Winter-Eben Student Service Award which recognizes students who contribute to the program through meaningful service done in a spirit of caring, concern, and generosity. The award was established in 2014 in memory of Bev Winter-Eben who served the program as the program manager for 20 years. Students are nominated for this award by their peers, faculty, and/or program staff.

Those who nominated Perkins say she is highly committed to promoting community within her cohort, being present for her peers, and providing excellent service within the program through her work as a teaching assistant and by providing thoughtful and constructive feedback when needed.

Perkin’s master’s thesis delved into exploring food tourism as a lever for food systems transformation through a series of interviews, data collection, and analysis.

Congratulations again to both students for their excellence and contributions.
