Supporting the Local Food System During the COVID-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 crisis has greatly impacted the King County local food system. Within a very short period of time, farmers were required to implement new operational practices with limited sources while also experiencing a cut in revenue due to the closures of farmers markets. In response to the difficulties local farmers were facing, a subset of the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks decided to 1) establish a central repository of COVID-19 resources on the existing Farm King County (FKC) webpage and 2) create a map of direct to consumer farms in King County so consumers can easily identify places to purchase local food products. In 11 weeks, over 60 resources for farmers were researched, compiled, and added to the FKC webpage. In partnership with the FKC and KC GIS teams, a survey was created to be distributed to KC farmers to add their business listed on the new King County Local Food Finder map.
